๐ŸŒฟ Unit 3: Living Things and their Environment
Unit 3
Living Things and their Environment

All living and non-living things are linked together. Living things depend on non-living things such as sunlight, soil, water, and air to grow and survive. Green plants make their own food by using the sun's energy. Animals receive this energy when they consume plants.

Some animals eat plants. These animals are called herbivores. Sheep, cows, and rabbits are herbivores.

Carnivores and Omnivores

Some animals eat other animals' meat. They are called carnivores. Lions, tigers, foxes, and dogs are carnivores.

๐ŸฆŠ Fox (Carnivore)
๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฏ Lions & Tigers (Carnivores)

Human beings and some animals eat both plants and animals. They are called omnivores.

When plants and animals die, all the chemical substances in their bodies return to the soil.

Step 1: Green Plants Grow in Soil

Unit 3
Bacteria & Food Web

There are millions of tiny living things in the soil. These tiny living things are called bacteria. Bacteria feeds on dead animals and plants. They break them down into tiny particles which mix with the soil. Plants repeat the cycle by absorbing these particles to make their food.

๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿฆ  Microscopic Bacteria in Soil

A food web consists of all the food chains. Each living thing is part of multiple food chains. All of the interconnected and overlapping food chains make up a food web.

๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ Interactive Food Web Explorer (Click any living thing to see its connections!)

All living things grow and change. When an animal or plant changes to fit its surroundings, we say it has adapted to its surroundings. The special body parts that a plant or animal develops to adapt to a particular place or living condition are called adaptations.

Animals are designed or adapted to live in their environment.
โ€ข A tiger, for example, has sharp claws and teeth for tearing flesh.
โ€ข A deer has horns for stabbing.
โ€ข A mountain goat has hoofs for kicking and climbing rocks.
โ€ข An eagle has a sharp beak and claws for catching mice and rabbits.

Animals that live in very cold places, like polar bears, seals, and whales, have thick fur on their bodies. They have a thick layer of fat under their skins.

Unit 3
Hot Places & Plant Adaptations

Most animals that live in very hot places, like camels, lizards, and snakes, rest during the day and look for food at night. They can store water in their bodies for a long time.

๐Ÿช๐Ÿœ๏ธ Camels store water in their bodies
๐Ÿ๐ŸฆŽ Snakes & Lizards rest by day, hunt at night

Plants that grow in very cold places have needle-like leaves. They make seeds inside cones. While plants that grow in very hot places have thick, fleshy stems that can store water. Their leaves are very small, and they have very deep roots. They have hard, waxy coats and thorns for protection.

Exercises
1. Answer the following questions.
(a) Where does all the food in the world come from?
It comes from green plants (which make food using the sun's energy).
(b) How is the energy from the sun passed on to animals?
Green plants use the sun's energy to make food, and animals receive it when they eat plants.
(c) What is a food chain?
Food energy passing from plants to animals in the form of a long chain.
(d) What happens to the bodies of dead plants and animals in the soil?
All chemical substances return to the soil, where bacteria break them down into tiny particles.
(e) What are adaptations?
Special body parts that a plant or animal develops to adapt to its surroundings.
(f) How are animals that live in very cold places adapted to live there?
They have thick fur on their bodies and a thick layer of fat under their skins.
